FIRST Robotics Team 2489 is composed of about 25 students working within the Build Division, which constructs the robot and manages procurement of parts as well as strategy, and a Business Division of 15, which manages the financial affairs, business planning, and public relations aspects of the team.

Our Build Division is divided into three subgroups, two of which work on the robot construction process. The Chassis and Manipulator subgroups construct their respective parts of the robot, including the electronics, pneumatics, and control systems (which are primarily mounted on the chassis), as well as the basic mechanical structure of the robot. The Build Division meets daily at our workplace during the six-week build season starting in January, and also meets weekly over the rest of the year to prepare for our off-season competition, Calgames, in October.

Members of Build work on the Manipulator.

The Business Division is the smaller and newer of the two division, having been created as we were going into our second year. It consists of the Finances, Documentation, and PR subgroups. The Finances subgroup maintains our budget and business plan, an integral part of our team manual that helps us stay organized and sustainable. The Documentation subgroup writes for and maintains the website, and documents robot construction activities in the form of journals, blogs, and emails.

Finally, the Public Relations subgroup has become our most established Business subgroup. Since our first year, when PR only managed shirts and buttons for competition, it has grown into a business relations team that talks to both small and large businesses and works out terms of sponsorship and partnership, and also helps our other subgroups obtain mentors and operating support.

We are still a growing team, having doubled in size since our rookie year, when our team of 20 members, mostly underclassmen, won the Rookie Inspiration Award.
