Team 2489 is made up of three divisions, Business, Build, and Outreach, which have their own separate set of responsibilities. The divisions work in tandem much like a business in order to ensure the team runs as smoothly as possible.

The build division is responsible of the design, construction, and programming of the robot. Early on, members are introduced to the principles of the engineering design process, which they apply to all aspects of the creation of the robot. All members of the build division collaboratively create a design or multiple designs for the robot. After a design is completed, members split up into multiple task groups, which are responsible for different parts or aspects of the robot, e.g. programming, electronics, and chassis. Through hands on work, each task group specializes in certain skill sets, whether it be handling power tools and drafting or writing code and understanding electronics. Since the task groups have different focuses, they meet on their own schedule to work on their individual parts. With communication as their most important asset, the separate task groups coordinate efforts over emails and meetings to ensure that the robot is constructed with minimal hiccups. The build division is also responsible for side projects such as refurbishing old robots for visits to schools and sponsors.

The business division is responsible for finances, PR, fund raising, and recruitment. The division supports the team financially, making sure there is enough money, people, and public support every year to compete in the next season. To do so, members of the division write letters to potential sponsors, apply for grants, write essays for team awards, organize fund raisers and other events, and actively communicate with teachers and members of the district board. With the array of different tasks to handle, the business division works based on a task assignment system, in which tasks are assigned to a small number of members to accomplish. Unlike the build division, business division meetings take place weekly. At these meetings, members give status updates of their tasks and work on or discuss tasks.

The outreach division is all about spreading awareness about FIRST and giving back to the community.  They present at local schools an encourage people to participate in FIRST.  They inspire kids to learn about STEM (Science Technology Electronics & Mathematics).  Volunteering is a huge part of outreach and provides volunteer hours.  It involves taking the robot to occasions such as the 4th of July parade.  The outreach team meets 3 hours a week on Sundays.  In these meetings, they plan what to and how they plan to help out next.
